The week before

48 hours out

Stop feeding, or feed very lightly, so there is less waste to break down
Shade the windows. Only move a tank that can be moved safely with the water lowered
Clean filter socks, skimmer cup and mechanical media so nothing rots in the dark
Lower the water level an inch in rimless tanks to keep sloshing inside the glass
Set the air pump and airline where you can reach them without light

Run the battery air pump, one pump per 50 gallons or so, or as the pump is rated
Keep the room closed, blinds down, and cover the tank with a towel to slow heat gain. A battery fan across the water surface cools it by evaporation
Do not feed and do not open the tank more than you need to
Every few hours, gently stir the surface. Leave the water alone unless the outage runs past a day with no air pump, then a small change with matched water helps
Gasping at the surface means oxygen is low. A cloudy haze means bacteria are dying off and the water is turning. Both mean act now

Confirm every pump restarted and nothing lost prime or is running dry
Check the temperature and let the heater or chiller catch up slowly
Test ammonia and nitrite daily for three days while the filter bacteria recover
Do a water change the next day, or sooner if ammonia or nitrite reads above zero, then resume light feeding
